Spirit of Community in Action
Our community does such a wonderful job embracing and rolling up their sleeves in support of so many excellent special causes and outreach efforts. We’re happy to share a few recent success stories in this fall issue.
Starting with the results of this year’s 16th Annual Collin County Great Strides Walk benefiting Cystic Fibrosis Research. $80,000 was raised at this years walk that was held right here at The Shops at Legacy and the EDS campus on September 11th. Many thanks go out to all of those who participated and made this year’s event a “Great” success!
With all of the recent storm devastation in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and surrounding areas, over 100 people completed Red Cross volunteer training at EDS in the month of September. Participants included EDS employees and representatives from a variety of Legacy businesses. Thanks to all the individuals that are making a difference in the lives of those in need of medical care, support and peace of mind.
This year’s 2005 Livin’ It Loud 5K Race was a tremendous success! The Journey to Dream Foundation (link) and The Shops at Legacy shared in efforts to support of this year’s event that took place October 22nd. The event was designed to raise awareness for “empowering youth to achieve their dreams” by overcoming and breaking away from the pressure and temptation of drugs, alcohol and other destructive behaviors. The 4th Annual Treelighting Festival at The Shops at Legacy is scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2005 with live performances by B5 and Everlife. This year’s event will benefit Children’s Medical Center Legacy. So mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details.
The 5th Annual Santa’s Helpers is once again scheduled to take place December 8th. This year’s collection promises to be another tremendous success. New, unwrapped toys will be collected at Legacy Town Center, on Thursday, December 8. Collections will be taken by the Christmas tree at the main plaza in front of the Marriott Legacy Town Center on Bishop Road, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Santa will be there to help Troy Dungan and other Channel 8 and Texas Cable News personalities collect your donations, which will benefit The Assistance Center of Collin County and the Plano Police Christmas Cops program.
For additional information on drop–off locations and Santa's Helpers calendar, please call the Santa's Helpers hotline at 214.977.6576 and stay tuned to www.wfaa.com for more details as they arrive.
Fundraising efforts continue in support of Children’s Medical Center Legacy. They are proud to announce a $200,000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Andrea of Plano, Texas, to the $15 million wePromise Campaign for Children’s Legacy. The Andrea’s gift will be used to fund construction efforts for Children’s Legacy, which broke ground on October 26, 2005. In recognition of their gift, a Family Retreat area will be named in their honor. To date, Children’s Medical Center Legacy steering committee members and friends of Children’s have raised $4.8 million for the new $106 million hospital. The new campus is scheduled to open in early 2008 on a 68.7-acre site at the southwest corner of Preston and Hedgcoxe roads in Plano.
And that’s the latest community spirit scoop. We salute all of those individuals that continue to demonstrate kindness and generosity in the Legacy community.
